Looks like it might be a red leaf maple. Did a quick google search & found that in cali, they're usually of the semi-dwarf variety
The picture was taken in haste, I only have 10 minutes between classes and I have to trek across campus. It's a tree, about 11 to 12 ft. high, very young. It leaves are the size of the palm of your hand with a long thin stem. Maybe oak or maple?
It would help if we knew if it was a tree, or a flower bush. Not sharp enough to identify.
