Field Notes

Description:

Eastern Chipmunks have pouches in the sides of their mouths for storing food. When the pouches are full they can be nearly as big as the animals's head. Eastern chipmunks are a fairly large chipmunk with reddish brown fur and five black stripes on their backs. The black stripes are separated by brown, white, or grey fur stripes. They have white and dark markings round the eyes. The underside is yellow brown or white. The tails is reddish brown and furry, but not bushy. Eastern chipmunks make shallow burrows in the ground and conceal the entries with leaves and rocks.

Habitat:

They usually live in open ground with rocky crevices, fallen logs and range from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, and Michigan in the US. South east parts of Canada.

Notes:

I made a new friend while camping in the Charlevoix region. He would come over and greet us every morning and have breakfast with us.

Chipmunks are very friendly and unfortunately, because people find them so cute, they feed them and so they are no longer afraid of humans, which can be harmful for them.

Looks like a dressed-up lady. True, I get frustrated that whether it is good or not that wild animals get used to human. But sometimes I think "Why not?" as they could also be protected by human from predators somehow. ^ ^"
