We had one of these in the small lake at our cottage yesterday. We are located @20 minutes north of Belleville, Ontario. It was quite something. I'd say about 4 inches long and 1.5 inches across at the widest point. And the claws were very effective. Managed to use them to scramble up the side of the net i caught him in. Kids were not too impressed!
Apparently, yes. They say it's a painful one too. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belostomatidae
