Lobster claw heliconia
Heliconia rostrata
9.74892, -83.7534
Field Notes
Description:
This Heliconia is different from other Heliconia species in that its flowers are down-ward facing. The first two pictures show the flowers when they are younger, and the third picture is of a mature plant with its full inflorescence.
Habitat:
Tropical rain forest
Notes:
This one has some small bees on it, but the plant provides nectar for hummingbirds. Also, it has an amazing name for its order: Zingiberales. How awesome is that? It's an order shared with the bananas, which have similar leaves.
