Antarctic Fur Seal
Arctocephalus gazella
-62.0698, -60.6768
Field Notes
Description:
This fur seal is a fairly large animal and has a short and broad snout compared with others in the family. Males are substantially bigger than females. Males live for about 15 years and females up to 25.
Habitat:
Antarctic waters
Notes:
I spotted this Antarctic fur seal from the deck of our ship as we left the Antarctic peninsula. We saw mostly crab eater seals around the peninsula so it was nice to a different species. It was asleep on a small iceberg when our ship passed it. It woke up for a bit and glanced at us.
