Field Notes

Description:

Red, cup-like flowers

Habitat:

Tropical rain forest

Notes:

The flowers of this Heliconia are shaped like cups, which can fill with water. The second picture shows this. The species might be "stricta," based on the green border on the cups, small purple....thing in one of the cups, and the green beginnings of flowers coming up from the cups, but I don't know for sure. This guide to the Heliconias of Peru also leads me to think it is "stricta," but I'm still not very sure about it: http://fm2.fieldmuseum.org/plantguides/guide_pdfs/174%20Peru%20Heliconi…
