Field Notes

Description:

Long leaves with spines on the sides (much like an aloe but these are sharp). The flowers begin as a long stalk which develops pink/red conical flowers as the stalk droops over. Finally, blue/purple flowers with white centers appear on the ends.

Notes:

We inherited this plant when we moved into the house. It was ugly and overgrown. Then these impressive flowers appeared on it and kept it from being discarded last year. I'd love to know what it is so I can improve it's appearance by giving it a more suitable growing environment.

Species ID Suggestions

Comments (1)

It looks like a perennial Bromeliad. They are a tropical plant and thrive in part sun/part shade conditions. I used to manage a greenhouse and we had a ton of these cuz they multiply so easily. I would recommend splitting them every other year or so. Give them away as gifts :)
