Field Notes

Description:

Unlike other squirrels, flying squirrels are active at night and have big eyes to help see in the dark. They also have long whiskers which are common to nocturnal animals.
They can glide 150' and have folds of skin(patagium) that they stretch out from wrist to ankle. They have flat tails to help control their glide.

Habitat:

Woodlands

Notes:

This flying squirrel was captured in a live trap as part of a mammal survey for newly developed Trout Brook Nature Sanctuary in Saint Paul, MN. It will be interesting to see what wildlife changes happen as the area is restored.
