Field Notes

Description:

This is a small-bodied hummingbird although the male measures up to 9 ½” (24 cm) with its extremely long tail. It is has a green head, neck, back and sides with a dark throat patch. It has a very small post-ocular white dot. The bill is fairly short and slightly decurved. The long tail is black.

Habitat:

This bird was photographed in a bush outside a house in Northern Quito, Ecuador (2,850 masl).

Notes:

I wasn’t able to get many identifiable pictures of hummingbirds during our years in Ecuador, but this one was really special. I couldn’t believe it actually cooperated. It must not have got the memo 😊
