Field Notes

Description:

Perennial, herbaceous and parasitic plant with a 10-30 cm aboveground shoot. Flowers have a dull pinkish to purple color. The plant is almost completely lacking chlorophyll.

Habitat:

Parasitic on the roots of hazel and alder, occasionally on beech, in shady places. Widespread in Europe and West-Asia.

Notes:

Spotted in the Hainich National Park, a beech (Fagus sylvatica) dominated forest area in Northern Thuringia, Germany.
