Description:

A large and impressive bee, rather big insect belonging to the sub-family Xylocopinae. Twice as large as honey bee, with massive body and huge head. Body all black, with wings with violet sheen. Heavy buzzing sound when passing by.

Habitat:

Common and widespread in the Mediterranean region. Seen in an open area rich in wild flowers - Arboretum in Trsteno, near Dubrovnik. Nests in dead wood.
