Field Notes

Description:

The Common Leopard Phalanta phalantha is a sun-loving butterfly of the Nymphalid or Brush-footed Butterfly family.

It is a medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan of 50–55 mm with a tawny colour and marked with black spots.

The butterflies are usually seen in two's and three's, nectaring on wild flowers. Males sometimes mud-puddle and I have seen many of them on patches of urine, and monkey dung.

Habitat:

Many of these butterflies were mud-puddling on the damp ground below a water tank that serviced the Ranger's Office.

Notes:

Kibale National Park (pronounced Chibale) is a national park in South Uganda protecting moist evergreen rain forest. It is 766 km2 (296 sq mi) in size and is located between 1,100–1,600 meters (3,600–5,200 ft) in elevation.

This is primarily a butterfly of Acacia thorn scrub and savannah / woodland habitats, but can also be found in clearings within rainforest. The migratory nature of the butterfly also takes it to coastal grasslands, city parks, gardens and many other habitats. It can be found at altitudes from sea level to at least 1500m.
