Field Notes

Description:

Wild rose or dog-rose is deciduous, climbing and thorny shrub, here some 2m tall. The leaves are composed of 5-7 leaflets. The flowers white, pale pink or pink; and about 4-5cm in diameter, with five petals. They mature into an oval 1.5–2 cm red-orange fruit, or hip.

Habitat:

Found on edges of a cultivated field, very close to marshy Natural Reserve of Mategnin. Semi urban environment of Geneva suburbs.

Notes:

The fruit, a rose hip, is very rich in certain antioxidants, as well as vitamin C. Hip is used to make syrup, herbal tea and marmalade.
