Field Notes

Description:

Smooth, curved edge, with small hairs on the sides of the leaves.

Habitat:

Tropical rainforest

Notes:

A perennial shrub native to Central America, soapbush has become invasive in tropical areas of the world, colonizes fragmented areas and choking out the native vegetation. Also called "Koster's curse," after the man who accidentally introduced seeds to Fiji in the late 1800s. Kind of a bad way to be remembered, huh?

Of course, in its native Central American habitat, it's a beautiful plant.
