After viewing some other photos of that kind of shrew I think that is what it is. There were no visible ears and I couldn't seem to make out where the eyes were either. The shrew's eyes are very small, so not surprising I couldn't see them.

It's kind of hard to tell from this photo, but I suspect this is a northern short-tail shrew, Blarina brevicauda. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Short-tailed_Shrew for a few photos. The shrew has a very pointy nose, which will distinguish it from mice or voles.
