Description:

About 5-6 cm long, legs only at one end. Head covered in mud, think it was trying to dig itself into the ground which was very hard. Might it perhaps turn into a dragonfly?

Habitat:

My garden

I'm inclined to say moth larvae. But it could be a beetle . . .
It's not a dragonfly larvae, they look like this: http://fairfieldsfifth.wikispaces.com/file/view/dragonfly_larva.jpg/34240633/dragonfly_larva.jpg. It looks kind of similar to larvae of the Tenebrionidae, (http://www.magicexterminating.com/UserFiles/Image/meal%20worm.jpg), but I don't see any legs on this one, but maybe that's due to the camera angle?
I think all dragonfly larvae live underwater.....and they have six legs and antennae.
