Field Notes

Description:

Some kind of beetle that ran into a window or building and was stunned. Bad photo, as it was night, but it was brown, with no apparent markings or anything special. Just rather beetle-looking...

I'll see what information I can find and try to find a similar insect online, maybe we can figure it out.
It wasn't directly next to water, but there are plenty of small marshy pools and creeks nearby, and a little farther, the Hudson river. I was pretty sure it was flying before it ran into a building, but I don't know if that helps at all...
The picture is a bit dark, but it looks like the hind legs are modified for an aquatic lifestyle, similar to a paddle. It might be a type of water bug, part of the order Hemiptera, rather than a beetle. Were there any bodies of water near where you found it?
