Field Notes

Description:

These elongated beetle-like insects have a slightly flattened body and small wings. Males have large pinching cerci at the end of the abdomen, female cerci are smaller.

Habitat:

Found in gardens and edges of forested areas.

Notes:

I found this particular earwig, along with about 30 of his compatriots, in our mailbox. They are largely nocturnal, hiding during daylight hours in crevices (or mailboxes....).
