Field Notes

Description:

Taken at James Bay on Santiago Island. This is an adult fur seal; they were much smaller than expected! They can be distinguished from Galápagos Sea Lions by their smaller size, shorter snout, larger eyes, and ears that stick out. In addition, they have evolved as nocturnal hunters.

Habitat:

Found mostly on rocky coasts, as opposed to sandy beaches. Require deeper waters to hunt, and will dive to depths of 100 meters.

Notes:

This species is endemic to the Galápagos.
