I think galewhale is on to someting... I think it is a Meadowhawk dragonfly as well, yet there isn't enough for me to say it's a yellow legged. Mainly because there is the Saffron-winged that could potentially be in your area and they are very similar from the back. Thanks for the post, and best of luck to you!
It might be a Yellow-legged Meadow Hawk: Sympetrum vicinum http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sympetrum_vicinum Did it have a red body? Also do you have the sighting date right? Dragonflies in general aren't out and about until mid-summer through late fall
