Field Notes

Description:

Largish brown bird that moseys around on the ground, flying only in short bursts. It's survival advantage is holding still with great camouflaging feathers; not such an advantage on a road.

Habitat:

Coastal temperate rain forest in Douglas fir, sitka spruce and alder forest.

Notes:

This one keeps flying at my car when I go by (extremely slowly as it's in my driveway), occasionally hitching a ride on my car's roof rack. "Dumb as a grouse" is an expression around here. It's too early in the season to hear their drumming.
