Description:

Two days ago (Dec 6, 2022) I posted a spotting of an Orb-weaver Spider with Prey - https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/692131707. The photos showed the Orb-weaver attacking and tying up a grasshopper on its web. When I tried to identify the Orb-weaver, I realized that it was partly hidden, in every picture, because of the struggle with its prey. I could not see the identifying features well enough to make a positive I.D. The prey was also insufficiently clear to identify properly, because of the silk strands which the spider was using to bind and wrap it. So, I went back to the exact spot, this morning, to see if the spider was still there, which it was, and I took the pictures, shown here, of the same spider with clear perspectives. This enabled me to identify it as Neoscona molemensis Tikader & Bal, 1981. My intention re. this spotting is that it should be linked to the spotting of this spider attacking its prey (the link is mentioned above). I also intend to post another spotting immediately after this one to deal with the identification of the prey (the grasshopper) so that all three spottings can be linked together to provide my description of the species interaction and proper identifications for the predator and its prey.

Habitat:

This Orb-weaver Spider was spotted in the rice mill backyard on an area of uncultivated and unused land. Its web was built in tall grasses and was positioned about 2ft. up from the ground.

Notes:

To get complete information on this species interaction and how the species involved were identified, this spotting should be linked with https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/692131707 and https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/1982484675
