Great Egret
Ardea alba
34.0094, -84.5836
Field Notes
Description:
I saw this egret only once - and toward the end of summer. It was wading in the shallower end of the pond where I had previously spotted several other herons, geese, and ducks. It was incredibly shy and I had to sneak up on it by crouching down and using a hedge to hide as I moved close enough to get these pictures.
Habitat:
You’ll find Great Egrets in both freshwater and saltwater habitats. They are colonial nesters, typically placing stick nests high in trees, often on islands that are isolated from mammalian predators such as raccoons.
Notes:
Spotted in a detention/retention pond in an office building complex in Kennesaw, GA
