Description:

Small palm tree (Arecaceae) indigenous to the rainforests in Southern Mexico and Guatemala. Collected by "Xateros" in the wild, it is exported for decoration and floral arrangements.

Habitat:

Understory of tropical rainforest

Notes:

Sustainable harvesting of this plant, along with "Chicle" (Gum) extraction from the Sapodilla Tree, provides much needed economic income to local communities in the Petén region of northen Guatemala.
