Field Notes

Description:

Yellow water iris produces large masses of upright foliage, can reach 5 ft. Yellow blooms top the leaves in April. Books state they need abundant water to thrive. Mine grow/ bloom/ multiply without a lot of irrigation, just a sprinkle during the dog days of summer. Tolerate any soil

Habitat:

This is growing in my garden but can be found through out the South

Notes:

Thomas Jefferson grew these at Monticello. He called them flower-de-luces

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fleur-de-lis Read a great story about how these guys ended up on the knight's standards and coats of arms... Apparently one day, one army found themselves confronted by a much larger group... they turned tail and ran... But found their retreat blocked by a huge English bog... One brilliant boy noticed the iris growing through a part of the bog and figured that where it was shallow enough for iris, it was shallow enough for a fully armoured knight to walk through without sinking out of sight... They crossed the bog and lived to fight another day... And remembered that the iris had saved their lives....
