Field Notes

Description:

Taken at tortoise breeding center in Puerto Villamil on Isabela Island. I do not know the exact species names, but the first two photos are dome-shelled tortoises, the third is known as a flat-shelled tortoise, the tortoises in the fourth photo are about 2 years old, and the fifth photo is of a tortoise a few weeks old as well as an unfertilized egg for comparison.

Habitat:

These photos were taken in a breeding center, however Galápagos Giant Tortoises are found throughout the islands, in both highlands and lowlands.

Notes:

There are 14 distinct, and endemic species recognized, four of which are thought to be extinct.
