Cicada Exoskeleton
9.27, -83.81
Field Notes
Description:
Immature Cicada nymphs live underground where they suck sap from the roots of trees and shrubs. When they approach maturity, they dig to the surface (hence the claw-like front feet) and molt into winged adults, leaving the exoskeleton behind.
Habitat:
Saw many of these exoskeletons attached to the trees on the edge of a mountainous rainforest area between San Isidro de la General and Dominical in Costa Rica.
