Field Notes

Description:

A stocky heron with short legs and bills compared to the bigger "day" herons. It has a black cap and back, light grey wings, white underparts, and red eyes. This one was part of a nesting rookery of at least 40 birds (pic 6).

Habitat:

Spotted at Klopp Lake at the Arcata Bird Sanctuary in Arcata, California.
