Common milkweed

Asclepias syriaca

Comments (2)

A very important host plant for butterflies, especially for monarchs. They obtain defensive chemicals called glycosides from eating the leaves of the plant. When a part of the plant is damaged, it produces a white latex, hence the name milkweed.
