Description:
Watched approximately 60 green sea turtle hatchlings crawl from their nest into the ocean. So small they would fit in the palm of your hand. Varying degrees of strength shown in the hatchlings. Some were very quick and a few lagged behind. One needed a helping hand when it was stuck in a deep footprint in the sand.
Habitat:
The nest was about 25cm beneath the surface of the sand, in dry sand just beyond the high tide line. The nest contained approximately 60 hatchlings. The beach contains very fine sand, not rocky with no litter.
Notes:
This nest had been covered with a safety net to keep out predators, and the safety net was removed early in the morning after the hatch so they could be monitored and protected from land / sky predators while making their way to the sea.
