Ya that's still the Mud Dauber and it has a separated body, this one pictured is more solid that why I think it's the Black or Blue Flower Wasp.
http://somethingscrawlinginmyhair.com/2009/03/14/blue-mud-dauber-wasp/ helpful maybe?

I can't find a wikipedia link but I'm almost sure that's what it is, also called a black flower wasp
could it be some sort of wood wasp? did it have a long ovapositor?
Ya the shape seemed to me that it would be some sort of wasp but those two types I mentioned had more separated backs. Hopefully someone else will have some suggestions :)
Seems a reasonable guess but I agree it does look more solid in the body than other pictures I can find - thanks for taking a look
I was gonna suggest Steel Blue Cricket Hunter but I think the bodies are still too different to be what this is.
That's my guess or idea but I'm not sure. The metallic-blue mud dauber forgoes building a nest altogether and simply uses the abandoned nests of the other two species and preys primarily on black widow spiders.
