I found a beautiful pink version of this while on a hike in Colorado. Will post on my spottings...
No you are right about the old mans beard as far as I can tell
I think this may be "Old Man's Beard".... also known as Clematis virginiana. Although I believe that "clematis virginana" may be a vine, and if this is like what we saw on our walk it would be a shrub, but at least that should give you a start
