Field Notes

Description:

This was my first spotting of one on these neat moths. They hover over flowers the same way a hummingbird does & gets nectar with its long proboscis. It doesn't sit on a flower like a butterfly does. Their bodies can be up to 2 inches long. This one was an inch long with a wing span of about an inch & 1/2. The wings have scales on them, but apparently the scales fall off & that makes their wings appear transparent.

Oh well done Valerie. To get such clarity in flight is special.
Great first spotting Valerie! Welcome to Noah. These hummingbird moths are so cool. It took me a while to get my first good shots of them.
Thank you Keith - I changed it :)
Beautiful, but should be in the Arthropod category.
