Field Notes

Description:

Hoya cummingiana is a small-leaf natural wax flower species endemic to the Philippines and has strong upright stems that can cascade when they get longer. The flowers are 8mm across and 12mm long in a star form. Each peduncles, normally found near the tip of each stem, can produce 10 to 15 flowers at a time. Unlike other Hoya, H. cumingiana cannot rebloom in the same flower stem. This Hoya is very hardy and reasonably fast growing.

Habitat:

It is said that H. cumingiana can be found in limestone cliffs (or places rich in lime) in the Philippines.

Notes:

An endemic Philippine species, this Hoya smells strongly like ripe mangoes. The fragrance can travel quite a distance especially when there are many peduncles in bloom. It is a hardy plant and can thrive and be exposed to full tropical sun.
