Description:

What mushroom/fungus is this? It's about 10" long as you can see on the second photo. My mom sent it to me for identification. It was in their yard in Texas. I had never seen one there when I lived at my parents.

Habitat:

I've seen Ganoderma growing out of wood chips and out of the ground where no dead wood was visible. There's probably buried wood nearby.
So this was growing out of the ground. Definitely looks like a Ganoderma of sorts or one of the pore fungi, but everything I have looked at about these always say they grow on trees or stumps or large logs......this one was about 3ft away from the trunk of a fruitless mulberry tree.
I can ask and make sure there's not some little stump under it. It does look like something I'd see on a tree rather than the ground
So it wasn't growing on a stump or log, but directly out of the ground. It looks a bit like a Ganoderma sp. and there are some in Texas I read, but on stumps etc...
