Scaled Quail
Callipepla squamata
38.6943, -104.459
Field Notes
Description:
Males and females are hard to tell apart. Medium sized with brown back, Pale face and light colored crest. Collar, neck to belly has a scale pattern feathers. Slight shadow across the eyes.
Habitat:
Spotted these early morning on rural roads. And most flew into the tall grass on farmlands.
Notes:
Not normally found in this part of Colorado but they seem to be spreading. I have watched reports as most were found more south in Chico Basin Ranch and I found a whole family fly off about 8 miles north.
