Field Notes

Description:

Tan cocoons. Black on one end with random black fibers on surface.

Habitat:

Found on an orange tree.

Notes:

Caterpillars use silk and setae from their bodies to make their cocoons. The setae in the cocoons can retain their toxicity for a year or more. The flightless females stay on their cocoons after emerging. Mate and lay their eggs on the cocoon.

Thanks Ornithoptera. I've seen caterpillars of both species nearby.
Either the White-marked Tussock moth, or Fir Tussock moth cocoons.
