Field Notes

Description:

The Fan-tailed Cuckoo is a slender cuckoo and the adult bird is easily identified by a yellow eye ring (slightly greenish in young birds), its generally dark slate-grey back and wings, becoming pale rufous below, with a boldly barred black and white under tail. Younger birds are duller and browner in colour.

Notes:

Followed a loud trilling sound and found this guy perched on a branch calling out to the world.

Exhibit a) Pallid cuckoo on the line behind our house. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7925381
Yes, Marta, they do leave after the breeding season of their parasitized species is over. Unfortunately for us Rachael, electrical lines run right behind our house. Some birds think that the best place to broadcast their calls to the surrounding valley. Which is why the cuckoos sound so loud. Oh well.
Congratulations on your spotting, Rachael - lovely series!
Yeah I feel for you Lori, this one was really loud and very persistent (thankfully not near our house - although we have Cockatoos, Ravens and Pigeons that like to make a lot of noise late at night and early morning!) I was however, very excited to see it because it's a completely new spotting for me :-)
I hope is only a seasonal call! :-)
I know it's wrong to hate the wildlife, but we have three cuckoo species (including this one), and they are driving me, well . . , cuckoo. The monotony of the calling, and how it continues well into the night. I will not shoot the cuckoos, I will not shoot the cuckoos. ; )
