Description:
Porcupines are large, stout, brownish black rodents. The coat consists of short under fur, long guard hairs (some of them white-tipped), on the back and sides there are sharp quills.
Habitat:
Porcupines most commonly live in boreal forests. In Minnesota white pine is a favorite food. In the summer, they eat a variety of woods and vegetation.
Notes:
This porcupine was seen at the Old Job Corp site along Hwy 126. It was spotted about 200 yds. northwest of the old tennis court which has now been planted with young jack pine. Porcupines are generally solitary, except during mating. In the winter several may den together in a hollow log or tree or other shelter.
