Field Notes

Description:

There is some confusion and discussion about garter snakes and exactly how they should be classified and there are numerous species and subspecies. I'm not sure which one this is, but it was about 2.5 feet long.

Habitat:

This snake was found near water, riparian forest.

Notes:

Interestingly, these snakes have recently been determined to be mildly venomous. The venom is administered by chewing, but effects are largely limited to mild swelling, redness and itchiness. This particular snake was quite belligerent. As I tried to move it off the road by "threatening" it with my foot, it struck at my boot but didn't make contact.
