Hi Thurd13, I was trying to do some searching on this beautiful hawk (because I've never heard of it before) and come across this site: http://feederwatch.org/learn/tricky-bird-ids/coopers-hawk-and-sharp-shinned-hawk/ which gives some explanations about the differences in both of the hawks you mentioned...hope this helps :)
