This is not a tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liriodendron_tulipifera. Tulip poplar flowers are yellow and they do not bloom until after the leaves are present. Is "tulip tree" a common name for Magnolia spp. in your area?
No, tulip tree. I do have magnolia pictures posted for comparison.
