Field Notes

Description:

Long needle like beak. Unique four toe anatomy; 2 toes in front, 2 toes in back, reddish orange head cap, brown wings and body with streak of white in wing

Habitat:

Forest, marsh, wetland, greenbelt

Notes:

Four toe anatomy: gripping onto tress, allowing sturdy stance for pecking with it's beak. Also a unique beak structure easing the force of the peck on his brain and ultimately his brain. Firm cartilage at base of beak where connects to head, acting as cushion to absorb blow. Another fact, the woodpecker also closes it's eyes every time contact is made between tree and beak to prevent eyes from popping out of head
