Field Notes

Description:

Moderate sized frog 60mm (HB = Head/Body Length - simialr to SV length). Plain looking frog with light brown dorsal and pale ventral surfaces. Back is covered in small elongated ridges. There is a dark brown stripe running from nose tip to the eye and a finer dark stripe running from behind the eye over the tympanum. There is also pale striping to the legs. It occurs in plain, single striped and two striped varieties. This species is very similar to the New Guinea mainland species Platymantis p. papuensis but differs by its finger pads being the of a similar size to its toe pads.

Habitat:

Found at sea level in coastal secondary forest. The first 2 images show a plain variety, calling male about 1m off the ground. The third image shows a larger two striped variety female on the ground.

Notes:

Reference for this spotting was taken from The Frogs of New Guinea and the Solomon Islands by James Menzies.

Thanks for your interest Felix. This little guy was one of my most researched spottings. Trouble is they keep discovering new frogs in New Guinea as a whole and most of the ones that are named have precious little documentation. I hope these images make it a bit easier for interested parties in the future.
For anybody interested I felt I had to do further work on this spotting. On much more exhaustive investigation I am now happy I have the right species. I have amended as necessary.
Thanks Polilla. Frogs were pretty noisey! So many new species still being discovered.
Interesting spotting and summary...well done!
