Field Notes

Description:

Seal salamanders are a lungless salamander and possess slits extending below each nostril. They also have a laterally compressed tail that gives the tail a fin-like appearance. Seal salamanders are extremely variable in color and can have a similar appearance to dusky salamanders; however seal salamanders have plain bellies while dusky salamanders have speckled bellies.

Habitat:

Keeney Creek - a small creek with rocky bottom in a forested, mountainous area.

Notes:

This adult was ~ 5" in length.

Ha! Great comment Tiz, if I get a snapshot of Gollum, this will be the first place I post it! This was a great spot for this species, with literally dozens of individuals all over the place. If you ever find yourself in the area get out at night and walk the creek with a flashlight!
I hope you take a snapshot of Gollum if you find him out there in the muddy ponds. ;) Beautiful shot of this salamander, I have never seen one in the nature. One day perhaps :)
