Field Notes

Description:

Argiope catenulata (Doleschall, 1859), This is the same spider that was featured in - https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/1241935625... This species is seen in my area so infrequently, that I feel compelled to give it more attention. I first spotted this spider two days ago and it had a web decoration called a "One-arm Stabilimentum" and when I visited the web again yesterday, it had replaced the first stabilimentum with another "One-arm", almost exactly the same. However, this is a young adult female and I knew that there would be more web decorations to come. When I checked again, this morning, there it was - a "three-armed Discontinuous Cruciate Stabilimentum". I know that what you see in the photos is a rather poor looking decoration, compared to those of some other Argiope spiders, such as A. luzona which in my estimation is the world champion stabilimentum builder, but it's a great start and I know that there is much more to come. After all, we are looking at A. catenulata - even its name is impressive and who could say that it is not a beautiful spider.

Habitat:

This Grass Cross Spider was spotted in a rice field.

Hi Tom, thank you for your comment. When I look at this spider, I am reminded of one of your spider pictures which seems to show a kind of "horror movie face" on the underside of the abdomen. I don't know if you noticed, but A. catenulata has a little "face" on its underside. It looks like a kind of "fox face mask" that people might have used in the old days at "masquerade balls".
