Description:
Intelligent member of the crow family with black plumage, a silver-grey neck and nape and black crown. One of it's main distinguishing features are it's white irises.
Habitat:
Woodland areas, parklands, urban areas. nesting in tall trees and with a fondness for blocking chimneys. Jackdaws pair-up one year and breed the next, they form large social groups that tend to stay together year on year. Once they've established a territory they will defend it vigourously againt all birds.
Notes:
Supreme intelligence, cooperative, and cunning. the two birds pictured, plus two who stood by waiting, figured out how to open a cage containing a suet-block and then working together they split the block into four equal pieces and flew off. Urban flocks like to nest in chimneys and in rural areas it's always wise to check for Jackdaws before lighting the first fires of autumn
