Field Notes

Description:

Male has a rufous breast and underside with a grey crown and nape, medium brown back and wings, with white and dark brown bars on the wings. The female has a pale brown back and wings with bars on the wings similar to the male, and she has a light grey underside.

Habitat:

Farmland, hedgerows, parks and gardens.

Notes:

Chaffinches will eat seeds off the ground but have a morbid fear of birdtables and seed feeders. if you want to attract chaffinches use seeds and crushed nuts on the ground. To see a chaffinch attempting to feed of a table is quite comical, about 300kcals of flight energy used to grab one seed.
