Field Notes

Description:

Slate gray to black all over with white bill and dark band near tip. Green legs and feet. A small white patch near the base of the tail. Prominent red eyes. Small patch above bill between eyes. It is the only black water bird with a white bill. Often seen in large flocks in open water.

Habitat:

Marshes, ponds, lakes.

Notes:

This American Coot was spotted at the St Marks National Wildlife Refuge in Florida.
