Field Notes

Description:

White head with black streaky crown to back of neck. Thick black eye stripe and black stripe from bill to neck. Black and white barring across the back. Flanks of both spots and black bars over white underside. Black on top the tail.
Males have a red nape and females lack the red color.

Habitat:

Mostly found in California in Oak trees but can be found in other rough barked trees.
